01 · The setup
boAt launched in 2016 selling affordable earphones and speakers into a market that treated audio as a spec sheet. The founders decided to sell it as a lifestyle instead — for young India, on young India’s feeds.
02 · The playbook
Long before the cricket and film ambassadors arrived, boAt spread its budget across a large number of micro and mid-sized creators in the niches where its buyers lived: music producers, college creators, gamers, fitness vloggers. Gaming creators showcased headsets; fitness creators wore the earbuds on runs. Customers were given a name — “boAtheads” — which turned buyers into a club that creators could speak to.
03 · Why it worked
Distributed visibility beat concentrated fame: a thousand small touchpoints across niches made the brand feel everywhere, at a lower cost than a few big endorsements. Ongoing relationships with creators turned them into advocates rather than one-off billboards, and the community identity gave the whole thing a name.
04 · Where it landed
boAt became the leading audio brand in India by volume and a case study in lifestyle branding for a hardware product, with celebrity campaigns layered on top of an identity that creators had already built.
The Oye take · what this means for India
Category by category, creator by creator — the Vizag gamer, the Hubballi music producer, the Kochi runner. Build the club first, in the local language; the celebrity can come later.
