01 · The setup
Zomato competes in a category where the product is almost identical to its rival’s. Differentiation had to come from culture — humour, local relevance, and being present in every city’s food conversation in that city’s own language.
02 · The playbook
Alongside its well-known meme-driven brand voice, Zomato works with micro food creators whose small, loyal audiences trust their restaurant picks, and localises content in regional languages through local creators. Creators are invited to tastings, community meets and spotlights on the brand’s own handles, and a large share of its creator base has worked with the brand for more than a year. Tier-2 and tier-3 challenges with micro creators have driven user-generated content and regional traction.
03 · Why it worked
Food is local, and a neighbourhood creator’s recommendation of a neighbourhood restaurant is the most natural advert there is. Long relationships keep the message consistent; regional languages keep it relatable; and the brand’s own humour gives creators a tone to riff on.
04 · Where it landed
Zomato became one of India’s most-recognised consumer brands on social media, with creator partnerships and regional localisation regularly cited as core to its engagement in smaller cities.
The Oye take · what this means for India
